Folk and Sufi: Two Rivers, One Sound

Punjabi folk songs celebrate everyday life: harvests, weddings, separation and homecoming. Sufi poetry takes those same images and turns them toward the Divine.

Shared instruments

The dhol, the algoza and the tumbi belong to both worlds, and so does the call-and-response chorus that pulls the audience into the song.

On stage

A good set moves between the two: a folk number to get the crowd dancing, then a kalam that brings everyone to stillness, then the dhamaal that lifts them back up.

That rise and fall is what makes a mehfil feel like a journey.
